'You don't have to destroy the Green Belt to save the Green Belt' say councillors Our Wednesday front page story has provoked a lot of reaction.
Here, members of the local liaison forum have their say. 11:32, 20 OCT 2016Updated15:42, 20 OCT 2016The guided busway Get daily updates directly louis vuitton bags fake to your inbox+ SubscribeThank you for subscribing! Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid Email On Wednesday, the News published nine reasons that City Deal bosses felt it was important to push ahead with a busway from Cambourne to Cambridge. The story has provoked a lot of discussion and reaction. In this article, Cllr Helen Bradbury and Cllr Bridget Smith (Chair and Vice Chair of the Local Liaison Forum) respond to the Greater Cambridge City Deal Executive Board's justification of the proposed busway. This is their response: "The City Deal Executive Board has issued a public defence of their plan to build a million busway through the Cambridge Green Belt. However, it has one fundamental and ultimately fatal flaw. While most people agree that we need better and reliable public transport, it does not provide any justification whatsoever for the absurdly extravagant, poor value and destructive scheme they propose. That's why current and past MPs, councillors, conservation groups and tens of thousands of residents have roundly condemned the plan. There is a far better way to deliver what the community needs. Use the existing infrastructure! City Deal latest: Council leader faces direct challenge tonight over controversial road closure scheme "The Local Liaison Forum proposes a route which would provide a reliable express bus journey time from Cambourne to Cambridge of less than 20 minutes. It would have negligible environmental impact and would be accepted, indeed mostly welcomed, by residents and stakeholders across the area. Crucially, it would cost a fraction of what is proposed to be spent on the off road busway, freeing up million+ for other infrastructure projects that would benefit many more people in the Greater Cambridge area. Furthermore, our scheme could be implemented now, rather than some time over the next 8 10 years given the high likelihood of legal challenges to City Deal's preferred option. Potential routes for the busway "So what is our route? We support a segregated busway route from Caxton Gibbet roundabout to Bourn, running through the new developments, and then following as close as possible to, or even using, the existing A428 as far as Madingley Mulch Roundabout. We then support an on road bus solution on Madingley Rise to the M11 bridge, and have carried out our own survey that shows the road is wide enough to accommodate two bus lanes. "It is wide enough because we also propose a segregated high quality cycleway that would run from Bourn to West Cambridge, via Caldecote, Hardwick and Coton. This will be a fabulous amenity for South Cambridgeshire residents. And given it could be routed as little as 100 metres away from Madingley Rise, there would be no need for additional cycle lanes on the road. "But are two bus lanes really necessary? City Deal have admitted it is possible to get a louis vuitton shoes ebay uk tidal bus system down Madingley Rise. But the idea has been dropped, partly because evening rush hour delay on this stretch of road is currently only 17 seconds; not forecast to increase, and so the outbound lane was deemed superfluous. Would not a continuous inbound bus louis vuitton white gold bracelet lane then suffice? Sightlines of the proposed routes "We believe the current bridge is wide enough to accommodate bus lanes. Even if this proves not to be the case, what difference would a thirty second delay make to commuters if there were simply a bus priority system there? "Entry into the West Cambridge site would be along Ida Lovelace Road, and the buses would then continue through the West Cambridge campus along Charles Babbage Road. Bus interconnection here would enable commuters to transfer to major employment centres. "At the heart of the City Deal Board's argument is that an expensive busway is needed for the Inspector to approve the Local Plan. That is simply not credible. It is absurd to suggest that an appropriately segregated and prioritised on road bus route with a reliable journey time of less than 20 minutes would not be satisfactory while a costly busway with a 15 minute journey time would. "So we say to the City Deal Board: it's time to listen. It's time louis vuitton bracelet lock me to learn from past mistakes, conduct a fair appraisal and provide what the community needs and wants.
You can satisfy the requirements of the Local Plan inspector with an effective solution right now, avoiding public opposition, legal battles and a public enquiry. Seize this opportunity and rescue the City Deal from the crisis that is engulfing it."Like us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDaily Newsletter.
